Product Description

The Allen-Bradley 1746-OB6EI, a digital output module in the SLC 500 system's 1746 series, features six outputs and no inputs. While it includes internal short circuit and overload protection, it lacks protection against reverse polarity or AC wiring errors. Note that this internal protection doesn't replace required external safety devices like fuses or circuit breakers. The module's auto-reset function allows outputs to automatically resume operation after an overload, potentially requiring an external fuse for complete protection. It dissipates less heat (2.9W total, 0.44W per point) than other 1746 series modules. Operating at 10-30V DC (source), it draws 46mA at 5V DC and 0mA at 24V DC from the backplane. Each output handles 2A continuously (12A total at 60C), with a maximum 1ms On-state and 2ms Off-state signal delay. It exhibits a maximum 1mA Off-state leakage, 2.9W thermal dissipation, and a 1V On-state voltage drop at 2A (4A surge for 10ms). Colored terminal blocks are removable for wiring changes, while uncolored blocks are fixed.

Is Your Device Showing These Signs?

The Allen Bradley 1746-OB6EI output module commonly experiences failures due to blown output fuses, often caused by inductive load spikes or incorrect wiring. Troubleshooting includes verifying proper field wiring termination and replacing damaged fuses with the correct amperage rating. Backplane communication issues manifest as a lack of output state changes, necessitating inspection of the SLC 500 rack and power supply voltage levels. Module damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD) during handling is also a frequent cause of failure, requiring careful handling procedures and proper grounding techniques.

Technical specifications

  • The Allen-Bradley 1746-OB6EI is a 6-output, 0-input digital output module for the SLC 500 system. It has internal short circuit and overload protection, but lacks reverse polarity and AC wiring error protection. While it has an auto-reset function after overloads, external safety devices like fuses are still necessary. It operates at 10-30V DC, dissipates low heat, and each output can handle 2A continuously. It features removable colored terminal blocks for wiring.

Our Repair Process for the

1746-OB6EI

Our repair process for the Allen Bradley 1746-OB6EI output module begins with a thorough inspection of field wiring terminations to confirm correct installation. Suspect modules undergo fuse testing, and any blown fuses are replaced with those of the specified amperage. If output state changes are absent, the SLC 500 rack and power supply voltage levels are meticulously checked to ensure proper backplane communication. All modules are handled with strict adherence to ESD prevention protocols, including proper grounding, to mitigate damage from electrostatic discharge.
